As The Story Goes ...
Coco, that was my Great-Grandmother’s maiden name (on my Mom’s side). Coco was the name my Mom wanted to name me, seriously. However my Dad had some objections. He agreed to the unconventional name – upon one condition. If I were to be named Coco then my middle name would be Nut. For that very reason, I was NOT named Coco. This story has become a family favorite and Coco has become a beloved nickname.
Life gets crazy. Family is my one constant. I love my family’s company, and company always means great food. Growing up, I always helped with the cooking. It is food, the rituals of both cooking and eating together that bring simple joy. I was once told that eating with someone is the second most intimate act to do with a person.
I have left the East Coast and am off on my own, adventuring in the great Midwest. So when I get a little homesick, or over-stressed, or just when I am hankering for a taste of home – I cook. Before leaving, I began to gather a handmade recipe book. It is filled with all kinds of recipes – handwritten recipes, recipes my Mom has collected, and recipes my Grandmother typed (on a typewriter). My recipe collection has grown with special thanks to new friends.
So here it is – my attempts at continuing a family tradition. Recipes I have grown up on; recipes I have been given; recipes I have gathered, concocted, and exchanged. Recipes from me to you, for you to gather, concoct and exchange. Save the ones you like. Print the ones you like-like. The printed pages fit in a standard binder. Create your own cookbook, add to one, or make one for someone. The pdfs can be complied into a digital cookbook – for your own use or to email to a distant friend. Compile, cook and connect.
