Because I was a girl,
I thought it was beautiful –
                        how bewildering.

I must have been crazy
when I went running West.
They gave me cigarettes,
six days a week.  Nicotine narcotic.

Daydreams kept me going.
Daydreams of being somebody –
the lovely actress or
the devoted playwright;
daydreams of being
brave – of being in love.

(Those things fade.)

I imagined it to be an innocent game
of hide & seek.
I masqueraded behind
A veil of mendacity

but men did not search for that beauty
that I so earnestly believed in.
Men prowled
to feed their curiosity.
My masochism must have been intriguing.
I came

to be a woman
when finally I escaped.  Leaving only a
vale of tears.
